Natural way to boost your immune system

Natural way to boost your immune system

As winter approaches you should be aware of the accumulated research behind a natural immune enhancing product called 1-3, 1-6 beta glucans.

This type of bet glucans is not the same as oat beta glucans which, although research shows it can help lower cholesterol levels, is not an immune booster.

1,3 1,6 beta glucans are extracted from the cell walls of baker’s yeast. Many research studies have shown they activate the body’s own immune defences, increasing the number and activity of neutrophils and macrophages—killer cells which hunt down external pathogens and internal rogue cells like cancer. In addition to increasing the activity of Natural Killer cells, beta glucans prime other lymphocytes – cells that bind to tumours or viruses, and release chemicals to destroy them. This is similar to the new approach called Immunotherapy that is causing so much medical interest.

Studies show fewer days of flu symptoms and less days off work –

The most studied form of 1-3,1-6 beta glucans is called Wellmune with over £100 million worth of research behind it.  Wellmune contains beta glucans that have been milled sufficiently small to activate natural killer cells. They are also small enough not to risk triggering a yeast allergy – which is possible with less well manufactured forms.

Key studies include:

  1. The gold standard for clinical trials is a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study. The European Journal of Nutrition reported on such a study in healthy subjects, which proved that beta-glucan 1-3, 1-6 helps prevent colds, improves symptoms and increases the body’s potential to defend against invading pathogens.
  1. A 90-day study, presented at a British Society for Immunology conference, assessed the effectiveness of Wellmune beta glucans, (the main active ingredient in the brand ImmunoShield). The study was conducted with a healthy population of 100 medical students during the peak of the 2010 cold/flu season.

Medical students, of course, work long hours in hospitals which inevitably places stress on their immune systems. Those taking Wellmune daily reported:

43 fewer days of symptoms than their colleagues who received a placebo

◄  Significantly reduced duration of URTI (Upper Respiratory Tract Infections) ie symptoms of colds and flu.

  1. A 4-year study called The FibeBiotics Project was run by a consortium of four European        universities.  According to a Fibe-Biotics statement: “Research indicates that some specific poly-saccharides, for example those from the cell wall of yeast, can activate the immune system … even when no intruders are present.“These polysaccharides have been shown to activate macrophages, which can ‘digest’   pathogens and  unwanted cells.
  1. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2009, and involving 150 people categorised as leading highly stressful lives, recorded that subjects taking 250 mg of Wellmune a day the dose level in ImmunoShield reported:-

► a 41% increase in general health when compared with the placebo group

► a 42% increase in people reporting increased  energy and reduced fatigue
and
75% less URTI symptoms.

At Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, researchers found that the compound enhances antibiotic efficacy in rats infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Further animal research highlights beta glucan’s positive impact on a form of Escherichia coli (ETEC), the culprit behind Montezuma’s revenge – otherwise known as traveller’s diarrhea.

Beta Glucans is safer than Echinacea

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has advised parents not to give   Echinacea to children younger than 12 years – because it can cause allergic reactions.

Although this risk is fairly minor, there is another reason to prefer Wellmune 1-3, 1-6 beta glucans over Echinacea. And it is to do with two terms that sound the same but are not.

Echinacea is an immune stimulant and it increases the number of white blood cells to fight infection. But long term use can create an overabundance of these white cells – a condition called a cytokine storm. This can lead to breaking down of the mucous membrane lining in the lungs and even increase risk of death.

Wellmune primes the immune system by encouraging production of neutrophils – natural killer cells which have a life of only a few days. It cannot create a cytokine storm and is therefore safe for           continuous use.

So unlike Echinacea, regular use of beta glucans does not risk inducing inflammatory cytokines which can over-stimulate the immune system.

Shiitake mushrooms also contain some 1-3, 1-6 beta glucans, but a supplement like Immunoshield delivers a consistent daily dose.

Cancer risk reduction?

Beta glucans have been used as an immune-adjuvant therapy – (in combination with pharmaceutical drugs) – for cancer since 1980, largely  in Japan, but also at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center in Louisville Kentucky.

MIN D

Researchers at Teikyo University’s Biotechnology Research Center in Kawasaki, Japan, showed that lentinan – a type of beta glucan found in shiitake mushrooms – can help suppress the formation and development of tumours – and lessen the side effects of cancer treatment

“Results of the clinical application of lentinan have proven prolongation of life span of the patients with advanced and recurrent stomach, colorectal, and breast cancer with only little toxic side effect,” wrote the study’s authors.

In an earlier Japanese study, mice with tumours that received beta glucans, including lentinan, experienced a  decrease in the number of tumour cells as well as an increase in neutrophils in solid tumours. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell that destroys invaders by using chemicals to break them down.

Summary

Many studies show that adding 1-3, 1-6 beta glucans to your daily diet—either as a supplement or in foods that contain the compound—can play a important part in helping your body fight not just the common cold but possibly also more serious diseases.

How good nutrition can repair your genes and keep you healthy

How good nutrition can repair your genes and keep you healthy

Nutrition and health supplements can support cause fine genes to switch re and bad genes to switch off. Through nutrition and lifestyle changes you can approach off genes that can lead to DNA broken and sickness and perspective not in the sever from off from genes that repair abnormal to your DNA and facilitate you stay healthy. Thats the conclusion of the scientists effective in the pitch.

Its systematic: in as tiny as 30 years enlarged nutrition has increased the average peak of Japanese by more than 2. Moreover, the impact of nutrition regarding genes is the excuse why pregnant women are urged to receive passable folic sour – because it directly affects the genome (the remaining genetic make-happening) of the growing baby. Researchers at the University of Utah Health Sciences have found that several B vitamins, including folic cutting, directly pretend gene discussion in the foetus and that fine-space persists in the adults genes, which he or she passes almost the subject of. So what we eat and the supplements we take can not only affect our health, but our children’s health. And we in turn have been affected by what our parents ate.
Not only are we what we eat – but our children are what we have eaten!

A New Science

The impact of nutrition on your genes goes by the unwieldly name of Nutrigenomics. But it simply means that nutrition affects gene ‘expression’. This means some genes are ‘up-regulated’ or increased in activity, others are ‘down-regulated’ – reduced in activity.

Biologists at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NUST) have studied the interaction of food and gene expression for over 20 years.  They conclude that the ideal overall diet is 33% protein. 33% carbohydrate and 33% fat – ideally in that ratio for each meal. Dr Berit Johansen of NUST says that a higher proportion of carbohydrate “stimulates our genes to initiate the activity that creates inflammation in the body.” These are “genes associated with development of cardiovascular disease, some cancers, dementia, and type 2 diabetes — all the major lifestyle-related diseases.”

Astonishingly excess carbohydrate even affects the genes that control our immune system causing it to react, as Johansen says, “as if the body were being invaded by bacteria or viruses.”

Carbohydrate, of course, includes potatoes, bread, pasta and baked goods as well as the more obvious sugars. They also include fruits and especially vegetables which are definitely beneficial.

But can specific nutrients affect specific genes?

Dr Charles Van Way at the University of Missouri Kansas City believes so: “the line between nutrient and drug begins to blur, and nutrients begin to take on some of the aspects of pharmacologic agents.”

We have already seen that B vitamins, including folic acid, can have a direct effect on genes and long term health. There are others, especially a class of nutrients called phytochemicals – i.e. plant derived nutrients.

Researchers have noted, for example, that certain polyphenols in green tea (called catechins) and green tea extract can up-regulate genes that help prevent cancer.  Genistein, a plant compound in soy, can do the same.

One of the key researchers in nutrition is Dr Dean Ornish.  Working at the time with the University of California at San Francisco, 93 men with early prostate cancer were given a largely plant-based (phytonutrient) diet and also urged to walk and meditate. After three months 453 genes (ones that regulated tumour growth and protein production) were less active with just 48 genes involved in cancer growth being more active. Overall, blood tests for prostate cancer activity showed a significant improvement and most tumours had shrunk.

In yet a further group studied by Dr Ornish, 93 people with heart disease were again given a mainly plant based  versus the same number of people on a normal US diet. The ‘Ornish’ group showed modified gene activity in 26 genes, resulting in less internal inflammation and less blood vessel injury. They lost weight, their average blood pressure dropped by approximately 10% and their health improved

Preventing genetic damage

The secret of staying healthy lies in helping prevent and repairing genetic damage. Pollution, free radical damage and the inflammation that gradually increases over time within your tissues, all cause damage to your DNA. That changes the way that genes function, silencing some protective genes and shortening your health span. Yet we are programmed for self –repair.  Your long-term health and anti-aging gaol is to reduce damage and support DNA self-repair. We are beginning to understand which nutrients do that best.

They are the plant based anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory polyphenols, B vitamins, beta carotene, zinc, selenium and, I think, almost certainly lycopene and vitamin D3. To these add exercise which elevates the level of the fat burning hormone glucagon – and which initiates bio-chemical reactions that stimulate DNA self-repair.

Conclusion

There is a difference between a genetic tendency and genetic certainty.

Although studies at the School of Medicine at UCLA do show that some people’s genes, for example, predispose them to certain diseases or even to gain more weight in response to a high fat and sugar diet than others.  However they are only predispositions. By altering your diet, supported by a well-formulated supplement to get an optimum nutritional intake, you can help avoid these susceptibilities. Nutrishield is a health supplement that is unique in that it is specifically formulated improve gene repair and promote positive gene expression. The health supplement was designed by Dr Paul Clayton the former chairman of the Royal Society of Medicine’s Forum on Food and Health.

It contains the full range of vitamins and minerals as well as Omega 3, polyphenols, B vitamins, betaine beta carotene, zinc, selenium, lycopene and vitamin D3. To get additional facts click the link Health supplements
